Artist Portfolios Hans Habeger "During the past four years, my interest in plein air painting and working on-site has motivated me to focus on creating landscape paintings, specifically urban landscapes. I am visually interested in the city. I concentrate on the interaction of light, space, color, form, and linear elements that I observe. I find this activity in various places around Des Moines . I discover it in the stacking and grouping of buildings, in the intensity and value of the changing sunlight on the space, in the silhouetted beams of the skywalks, and in the convergence of city streets. I work on a painting for the period of two to three months. Although, some of the small paintings may be worked in 2 or 3 sittings, I always return at the same time of day since light is critical to consistency in color. By working in the same time frame over several months the paintings begin to be a collection of moments that remain cohesive. After each season, several paintings remain in progress, unfinished, to be worked on from observation the following year. While working on-site I am also confronted by practical issues. Among the daily questions are, where to park, will my spot be obstructed, how should I deal with talkative on-lookers, where should I place my easel, and will the weatherman right? These topics are not an issue in the comfortable and controlled environment of the studio. In the process of working, preparatory drawings become important. I first draw small sketches considering the composition. After the sketch, a larger line drawing is done. While painting, drawing and measuring are used to scale and position shapes. The changing nature of the work and the space keeps the process active and engaging." -Hans Habeger
